R&B star Trey Songz ordered to pay Ksh.1.4 billion to police officer injured during hotel altercation
A local court ruled against him in the case involving Maryland Capitol police officer Tyrelle Dunn, who was injured while trying to help his wife during the altercation.
Prior to the altercation, Trey, whose real name is Tremaine Neverson, had reportedly brought a group of women to his hotel room at the Cosmopolitan after celebrating his 37th birthday at Drai’s Nightclub in Las Vegas. One of those women would eventually accuse him of rape.
According to court documents, Dunn’s wife was allegedly one of the women who was lured to a hotel room by Trey Songz’s security team under the pretense of meeting the singer. Once inside, she was reportedly assaulted and had her phone taken.
Dunn said he heard his wife scream and he tried to rescue her. That is when Songz and his security team attacked him. He suffered serious injuries, including fractures to both eye sockets, and had to take over a month off work.
“The attack has had a profound and everyday impact on my life,” Dunn said in the complaint, according to multiple US media outlets. “I still have the scarring, and suffer emotionally from the attack. I think about the attack every day when I see the injuries to my face and body.”
Hotel staff’s emergency calls revealed confusion and fear as security hesitated to get involved, worried the people inside Trey Songz' room were armed.
Despite the severity of the situation, Las Vegas police declined to file criminal charges in 2022, citing a lack of evidence.
However, the civil court sided with Dunn, awarding him damages for medical costs, pain, and suffering. Trey Songz did not respond to the lawsuit, resulting in a default judgment.
This legal setback adds to a history of legal issues for the singer, who has faced multiple allegations of assault and misconduct. Despite his ongoing legal troubles, Songz remains active in the music industry, with concerts scheduled.
