Popular activists Hanifa Adan and Njeri wa Migwi among Kenyans arrested during 'Occupy Parliament' protests

Popular activists Hanifa Adan and Njeri wa Migwi were among the several prominent faces who were arrested alongside many other Kenyans as the Occupy Parliament protests snaked around Nairobi's CBD.

In a video shared by Citizen Digital, Hanifa, a renowned environmentalist, could be seen being ushered towards a waiting police van. But before she agrees to hop onto the van, a brief argument between her and a cop ensues.

'Usikimye' founder Njeri wa Migwi was also arrested alongside several other protesters as police continued to patrol the streets, rounding up anyone participating in the protests.

Soon after, a defiant Migwi took to her X account to share that she had been arrested while also sharing a video in which she and her compatriots can be seen chanting fervently.

"Ruto must go! Reject that bill!" they can be heard repeating.

Also arrested was popular X personality and 'Chipo Mwitu' vendor Beverlyn Kwamboka.

Ahead of the Occupy Parliament protests, Nairobi Region Police Commander Adamson Bungei flatly stated that the gatherings were outlawed and that the organizers had not submitted proper documents to warrant permission.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, the police chief said they have mobilized officers to ensure that any gathering is dispersed instantly in the CBD.

"We have heightened our patrols within the CBD to ensure there is no disruption of businesses. No body applied for any license or permit to do the protests," said Bungei.

Nevertheless, Kenyans still went ahead and gathered all across the city, with some of the main gathering points being Nation Centre and Kenya Archives.

Videos shared online show tens of Kenyans marching around the streets, chanting, singing and making loud anti-Finance Bill statements.

As news of the arrest of some of the protesters spread, activist Boniface Mwangi shared a phone number which he said arrested Kenyans could call/text and state their status.

He also shared an MPESA Paybill Number imploring Kenyans of goodwill to send cash donations to secure cash bail for arrested protestors.
