Orrrrrrrait: DJ Afro is voicing Netflix promos and Kenyans online are rejoicing

Kenyan movie commentator James Muigai, commonly known as DJ Afro, is now part of giant streaming platform Netflix's promotional campaign and Kenyans online are ecstatic.

It all started earlier this month when Netflix shared a movie promo with a voiceover that seemed to closely copy and imitate the sensational DJ Afro on its Kenyan Twitter account and many were not happy.

Kenyans on Twitter (KOT), in their usual fashion, jumped in to express their dissatisfaction with the move, urging the company to get the real DJ Afro to do the job or scrap the whole exercise altogether

“This is what we want, the real Dj Afro. His voice and creativity is unmatched si hawa ma copycat munatuletea. We want our OG,” Twitter user @MachariahFaith wrote.

@KennethNjeruKE tweeted: “Are you aware there's DJ Afro (matata kuruka) the best of them all in East and Central Africa? Stop this disrespect.”

User @mutahikim asked: “Kenya's favorite is DJ Afro. Is that too much to ask for?”

On Tuesday night, Netflix followed with another clip, this time commentated by the real DJ Afro.

“Orrrrrrrait DJ Afro has spoken,” wrote Netflix, referencing DJ Afro’s signature dragged-out consonant sounds in his commentary.

Kenyans on Twitter have since gone on a frenzy thanking the platform for listening to them and also putting some money in the creator's pockets.

Here are some of their reactions:

“Let me get popcorns and we are good to go,” wrote @manonojose.

“So, Kenyans forced Netflix to go looking for ORIGINAL DJ Afro?? Enyewe wakenya ni wale watu. Congratulations my country people,” said @Jmwazzak.

“DJ Afro to the world!” tweeted @Kahush.

“Our childhood was lively because of this Legend,” @kwibita said.

“KOT is a movement,” said @guylikericky.

“Dj Afro on Netflix and the whole world is happy,” @ressy_an said.

“Finally, Sasa tunaeza enda kuregister kura na amani,” @R_Milan10 wrote.

“I am once again vocalizing my unsolicited opinion on Netflix hiring DJ Afro. Kudos for that. However, the original sound quality('bvvvv') must be maintained, and the video quality capped at 360p. That advert was missing those critical elements. Traditions must be respected!” @batmanesque98 said
