Movie Review; 'Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse'

'Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse' serves as the sequel to the incredibly successful and immensely enjoyable 2018 film, 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.'

In this second outing, Miles Morales, the Spider-Man of Earth 1610, reunites with Spider-Woman Gwen Stacy and catapults across the multi-verse where he encounters a team of spider people charged with safeguarding the very fabric of existence.

However, tensions arise among the heroes when they differ on how to handle a new threat, forcing Miles to redefine his understanding of heroism.

Similar to its predecessor and other films penned by the talented duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, 'Across the Spider-Verse' is incredibly fast-paced; information and jokes are thrown at you so quickly that you can miss them sometimes.

Yet, this quality makes the film highly re-watchable, allowing viewers to catch jokes they may have initially missed during the second or third viewing.

The film also boasts of having a myriad of art styles and an abundance of interesting  characters.

While watching the film, I really did feel like a kid in that I had that genuine sense of awe that I have lost for so many films.

I was overwhelmed by the craftsmanship that went into creating the film, the sense of being of the characters and the feeling of weight and gravity that is so difficult to achieve with just visual effects.

The film's aesthetic is simply breathtaking, oozing style in every frame, while simultaneously delivering depth and substance.

Every character that appears in the film is also on a journey that feels relatable.

The choices these characters make feel like the hardest they've ever had to make; they're constantly put in scenarios that challenge and ask them to rise above themselves which is typical of any super hero movie.

The film also wisely pokes fun at that the history of spider people; it knows when to make jokes about that and it knows that we know the history too. In some ways though, the film does feel like it has to remind us about a lot of things.

There also might have been just a bit too much family drama early on in the film in my opinion.

With the third and final installment of the Miles Morales Spiderman films currently in the works, all I can say is just like its predecessor, Spiderman Across the Spider-verse is without a doubt one of the best comic book films ever made.

I think many people will share my sentiments after watching this masterpiece. The movie is so fun and difficult to predict and that's why I didn't delve too deep into its plot.

'Spiderman: Across the Spider-Verse' is now playing in theatres near you.
