Kenyan music is grooving its way into playlists around the world, with new Spotify data showing a staggering spike in both local and global consumption.

The streaming giant has revealed that in 2024 alone, Kenyan artists were discovered by new listeners more than 95 million times, underscoring the nation’s rising star on the international stage.

From the unmistakable beats of Gengetone to the smooth fusion of Afro-pop and Benga, Kenya’s soundscape is captivating ears far beyond its borders.

According to Spotify, global audiences spent over 120,000 hours streaming Kenyan music, and more than 16 million user-generated playlists now feature Kenyan artists.

But the boom isn't only overseas. Back home, local consumption of Kenyan music has jumped by a jaw-dropping 277% over the last three years — a sign that Kenyans are dancing to their own tunes more than ever before.

Meanwhile, music exports have surged by 94%, and streams of music by Kenyan female artists from international markets rose by 98% this year alone.

"These figures demonstrate that Kenyan music is no longer just a regional phenomenon but a significant player on the global stage," says Phiona Okumu, Spotify Head of Music for Africa.

"The growth both domestically and internationally creates opportunities for Kenyan artists and the broader cultural economy. What we're witnessing is the result of incredible talent combined with digital accessibility that allows these unique sounds to reach audiences worldwide."

Spotify’s latest insights paint a picture of a vibrant ecosystem where homegrown pride harmonizes with global recognition.

Hundreds of Kenyan artists have landed spots on Spotify’s influential editorial playlists — from household names to up-and-coming talent — all showcasing Kenya’s rhythmic blend of tradition and innovation.

Streaming platforms like Spotify have been instrumental in this evolution, leveling the playing field for artists by making it easier for their work to reach global ears.
