Kenyan TikToker Roy Kanyi has been named among six content
creators from Sub Saharan Africa (SSA) to watch this year.
Kanyi is the only Kenyan on TikTok’s 2025 Discover List,
which celebrates 50 content creators globally across five categories,
namely: Icons, Innovators, Foodies, Educators, and Originators.
The tech enthusiast was recognized in the ‘Educator’ category
owing to his ability to simplify “the complex world of gadgets and electronics”
for his audience.
“His engaging, relatable content helps users make informed
decisions on smartphones, televisions, and tech accessories, making him a go-to
creator for tech education,” TikTok said in a release to newsrooms.
In the ‘Culinary’ category, Nigerian food content creator
Tosin Samuel (Tspicekitchen) and her Ghanaian counterpart Abena
Amoakoaa Sintim-Aboagye (Chefabby) made the cut for redefining food
storytelling.
Nigeria’s Charity Ekezie was acknowledged in the
‘Icon’ category for using humour to challenge misconceptions about Africa.
“Her fusion of comedy and education has captured an audience
of over three million followers. From viral skits to global
collaborations—including a video featuring Bill Gates—she has turned an inside
joke into a global trend,” TikTok noted.
Tanzanian sports content creator Fanuel Masamaki,
also known as Zerobrainer0, fell in the ‘Innovators’ category. TikTok
stated that: “His signature beige blazer and comedic twist on football make his
videos instantly recognisable. Fearlessly pushing creative boundaries, he
continues to inspire millions. He was awarded the Sports Creator of the Year in
the just concluded TikTok Creator Awards that took place in South Africa this
month.”
South African duo Thato Seth Mathobela (TitoM) and Bongani Kenneth
Sibanyoni (Yuppe), popularly known as Titom +Yuppe, were listed under the
‘Originators’ category for “harnessing the power of TikTok to take South
African music global.”
“We
carefully consider all content creators on our platform, selecting finalists
based on their impact both on TikTok and in the real world,” said Boniswa
Sidwaba, Head of Content Operations, SSA, TikTok.
“These
creators have sparked trends, started meaningful conversations, showcased
creativity, and fostered safe spaces for their communities.”
