'Hypocrite!' Angry Nigerians blast Davido for voting in the US Elections
As election day dawned in the US on October 5, 2024, Davido took to X to post a picture of him holding his 'I voted' sticker, happily announcing that he exercised his civil right for the first time ever.
"First time voter!" he wrote, while attaching two US flag emojis.
However, his post was not well received by many Nigerians, who accused him of not being as vocal about the Nigerian presidential elections in 2023 as he is now.
Outraged, scores of X users took to his comment section to call him out for reportedly not voting in Nigeria, not showing any active participation in Nigerian politics and also, not using his immense influence to impact the Nigerian political system.
"This guy is a hypocrite, you’ve never voted in any presidential election in Nigeria, but now you’re seeking validation from Americans," a fan commented.
Some fans also called him out for his hypocrisy, slamming him for appearing to politically appease his American fanbase at the expense of his home country.
Nigerian social media personality Daniel Regha wrote, "Davido where was this energy during this Nigerian general election? U didn't show proof of vote, didn't show support to voters, or even bother to use ur platform to call on the INEC when there were reports of electoral malpractices across the country. But u are proud to vote in the US election? This is not the achievement u think it is."
Daniel Iheme, yet another disgruntled fan, wrote,"First time voter? You mean this is your first time? So not even in Nigeria? How can a 31 year old man not have voted ever in his life? Yet your own family are Nigerian politicians!"
Through it all, Davido still found some unlikely support from a section of fans who defended his right to vote in his birth country.
One such fan wrote, "You people forget Davido was born in the USA. He's actually a US citizen by birth. So, what happens in the US directly affects him as a US Citizen. Surely, he has a right to decide the path his birth country takes!"
As of early November 6, Donald Trump had 267 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House and was leading in key races left to be called, including Michigan and Wisconsin.
Already, a trickle of world leaders have began congratulating Trump on his assumed victory in the presidential election.
Describing Trump as “my friend,” Narendra Modi, India's prime minister and the leader of the world's largest democracy, posted several photos of him and Trump with a message conveying his "heartiest congratulations."
French President Emmanuel Macron of France also posted on X, where he described his readiness "to work together as we have done for four years."
Elsewhere, Italy’s right-wing president, Georgia Meloni, posted her own well-wishes describing Italy and the U.S. as “sister nations, linked by an unshakable alliance, common values, and a historic friendship.”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić also offered his congratulations on X.
