'Hatupeani kazi hapa!' Kenyans blast CS Murkomen for dismissive attitude towards a jobseeker

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has earned the ire of the internet after appearing to heartlessly dismiss a job seeker while presiding over a function in his ministry.

The interaction between the CS and the job seeker was captured on video by an anonymous person who then leaked it on the internet.

While moving around what appears to be a lobby, shaking hands with the visitors, two gentlemen stand up to shake Murkomen's hand, and one of them jumps on the opportunity to say he is on a job search.

"Habari zenyu?" Murkomen says, hastily moving around.

Two gentlemen then stand up with the taller one, dressed in a blue shirt, clasping his hands into those of the minister, appearing to make an impassioned but indecipherable plea.

Towards the end, one can hear him say, "Unitafutie kazi Mheshimiwa..."

The CS wastes no time in dismissing the individual - or even paying attention to his plight. Quickly, he shuts him down saying, "No, no... Hatupeani kazi hapa..."

After the video went viral on X, Kenyans shared their sentiments with many expressing their displeasure at Murkomen's apparent dismissive attitude.

Popular X influencer and Consumer Federation of Kenya (COFEK) boss Stephen Mutoro was one of the people who called out the Cabinet Secretary for his aloofness, saying that he was ready to offer the man a job himself.

"@kipmurkomen blasts a job-seeker. That is the whole difference of humility between President @WilliamsRuto and some pretenders to the throne. Will Mr Murkomen repeat the same if he was in Elgeyo Marakwet? Sad!" he wrote.

"Too much power corrupts, absolutely. Mr Murkomen, the other day you were begging for jobs like some of us. Please treat hustlers with dignity. Arrogance won't help. After all, power is transient..."

Mutoro also suggested that the CS should offer the jobless man an apology. He also asked the public to help him identify the man in order to help him.

"Please publicly apologise to that poor and genuine hustler soul by making him your office assistant. You defamed him. You should have even suggested to revert back to him," he said.

"Anyone who has the contacts of the man Murkomen blasted? I would be happy to find him something small to do - if he agrees..."

Many other people who watched the video also joined in the condemnation of the CS, reprimanding him for appearing too cold and unbothered to a man desperately seeking his audience.

X user @Wa_Githinji said, "That was a hard and humiliating slap on an innocent, needy male adult. Wasn't there a better way of putting it? Did it find @kipmurkomen in a bad mood, or was it one of his bad days?"

On her part, user Mary Karanja said, "Thank you Mutoro for calling out the unbridled arrogance of CS Murkomen. This is sad indeed. Rudely dismissing a hustler requesting for a job is a tragic & regrettable incident. Murkomen should have shown some sense of sympathy & help that hustler where necessary...Unfortunate!"

The video appears to have been recorded when the Cabinet Secretary met the E-Citizen team to discuss the issues that he said have affected the services provided to the public.

"We have resolved to accelerate the pace of migration and strengthen the team responsible for service migration by including personnel from the ICT Authority," the CS said in an X post.
