David ‘Tosh’ Gitonga, one of Kenya’s best film directors in Kenya, is among the six mentors for the upcoming Netflix and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) short film competition dubbed ‘The African Folktales, Reimagined.’


The Nairobi Half Life director took to his social media to make the announcement.

Along with David Tosh, the list includes African film industry leaders such as Nigeria's Femi Odugbemi, South Africa's Bongiwe Selane, Ghana's Leila Afua Djansi, and Congo's Jean Luc Herbulot.

 

In partnership with UNESCO, Netflix will award each of the six finalists $25,000 (Ksh 2.8 million) in the search for the best-reimagined folktales by African storytellers.


Additionally, a $75,000 (Ksh 8.4 million) production budget through a local production company to make their own film under the guidance of these industry mentors.


The collaboration will ensure everyone involved in the production is compensated. Their films will also premiere on Netflix in 2022 as an “Anthology of African folktales”.


David Tosh, a passionate filmmaker, directed 'Disconnect,' a Kenyan romantic comedy film that premiered on Netflix in 2018 and won best male supporting actor, best sound, and best cinematography at the Kalasha Kenya film television awards.

 

Tosh also directed 'Nairobi Half Life,' a 2012 Kenyan drama film that was nominated for the 85th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film.
