DJ trio Major Lazer release new remix of Mwaki hit song
The remix music video marks Major Lazer's first collaboration with a Kenyan artist.
The release comes one month after Zerb, a Brazilian music producer released the official music video featuring Nzau.
Noticeably, the remix version features various video clips from the official music video, which was shot at the Hell's Gate National park. It has so far garnered a whopping 6.5 million views on YouTube since its release and the song has surpassed 50 million streams on the digital music service, Spotify.
The remix music video displays the name ‘Kenya’ and the popular Mombasa tusks in the beginning, signaling that it was shot in Mombasa County.
The video pays homage to the Kenyan matatu culture, as it is shot in a matatu, showcasing graffiti art, thumping music, and flashy lights. Additionally, Diplo is seen hanging on the moving matatu’s door, a norm in the matatu culture, as Nzau sings along her amazing vocals through its window.
Netizens took to social media to praise the music video, highlighting the matatu culture displayed in it.
"Mathree (matatu) culture has lived up to the hype," an X user wrote.
The ‘Mwaki’ song, with Kikuyu lyrics, gained popularity after netizens on Tiktok began spawning remixes and even posting videos of themselves either reacting to the song's seismic effect or just jamming along to it last year.
