DJ Kalonje threatens to sue YouTuber Oga Obinna over defamation claims
While making the revelations on his Instagram page, a miffed Kalonje tore into Obinna, accusing him of slander and blatant 'unprofessionalism' as well as for 'tarnishing' his brand and complete disregard for his feelings.
He wrote: "It is truly baffling to me how I ended up being dragged into someone else's interview, let alone why anyone would attempt to tarnish my name and brand for the sake of a few fleeting views and likes. My brand is something I take with the utmost seriousness, and I refuse to entertain any form of defamation, whether it's intended as a joke or not."
"Your complete disregard for others when you recklessly spew harmful statements about someone else's brand is not only appalling but utterly irresponsible. I have dedicated years of hard work to building my reputation, and your actions are nothing short of unprofessional and immature."
Kalonje went ahead to follow up his dissatisfaction with a demand letter addressed to the YouTuber, specifying various legal damages incase Obinna failed to comply with the stipulations.
According to the demand letter seen by Citizen Digital, Kalonje claims that Obinna, on his Obinna TV Extra show, claimed that the DJ lacks the skill to play 'LIVE' mixes to a 'LIVE' audience.
Part of the letter reads: "On 19th August 2024, you posted a video on your youtube channel, Obinna TV Extra, with the above-mentioned title where you stated that the director of our client one, DJ Kalonje, cannot play live mixes despite the same not being true."
"Note that your actions of making such utterances amount to defamation and are a threat to our client's business and brand with regards to current and future bookings."
Obinna has now been legally instructed to make a public apology to the DJ, failure to which, a legal route shall be explored in seven days.
"We shall proceed to institute the requisite legal proceedings against you at your own cost, risk and consequences," the letter concludes.
DJ Kalonje is one of the most recognizable and celebrated DJ's in the Kenyan party culture. His mixes, alongside those of the likes of DJ Demakufu, birthed the popular Matatu DJ music culture.
Prior to hitting it big, Kalonje would cobble up popular mixes in his house, package them into DVDs and then personally distribute them to Nairobi's matatus and 'local' hangout joints.
He now is one of the most sought-after DJs in Kenya, regualry playing at some of the biggest and most popular nightclubs in the country every weekend.
