Burial of popular Super Metro tout 'Makanga Bae' turns chaotic with accusations of stolen funds

The funeral of popular Super Metro tout Gerald Mwangi Njoroge, affectionately known as 'Makanga Bae' turned chaotic when the family of the late bus conductor accused some of Mwangi's friends of disrespecting his last day and also, misappropriating his funeral funds.

The funeral, which was held on Wednesday, October 23 at Mwangi's family home, ended up becoming a shouting match as the family and friends of the late tout exchanged words, even as the master of Ceremony attempted to calm matters and control the flaring emotions.

At one point, one family member arose to speak to the gathering, directly accusing the friends of dishonoring the late Mwangi, adding that, due to some unspecified actions from his friends, the ceremony had become an embarrassing spectacle.

"Watu hawa wote wametukosea kama family. Hatukutaka kuzika ndugu yetu vile munamuona yuko. Hapo Gerald vile amewekwa hapo si sawa..." the female relative lamented.

According to them, the funeral was supposed to be a grand send-off, worthy of Gerald’s memory but a section of his friend's turned the entire affair into a messy sham.

While also echoing the sentiments of the relatives, Gerald's mother stood to address the mourners, also complaining that her son had been disrespected by some of his friends.

Gerald's mother, in particular, singled out three of Gerald's friends - Muturi, Kajuju and Teddy - who she expressly accused of misappropriating his funeral funds and also making false promises to the family.

While fighting back tears, she said:  "I haven't been sleeping but it's okay. I was given a total of Ksh. 63,000 from Super Metro, which I used to purchase funeral necessities including clothes...."

"Muturi had said that he would buy a coffin worth Ksh. 50,000. He had also said he would cater for food worth Ksh. 85,000. Today, as you can see, there's neither food nor water."

She added, "What a shame! And you've been the ones publicising us on the internet. All this has been caused by Muturi, Kajuju and Teddy. I've left you in the hands of God..."

Things got even uglier as the family went on to reveal that Gerald’s mother had contemplated suicide due to the emotional strain caused by the funeral group’s internal conflicts.

As the MC took over the microphone, he attempted to admonish Muturi and his associates but his opening statement was quickly drowned by loud chants of disapproval from the crowd. Sensing danger, he quickly changed tune and asked the mourners to stand up for a worship chorus.

Despite the distressing acrimony, Gerald was eventually laid to rest even as emotions still ran high and some mourners felt slighted.

Gerald, popular online for his dashing looks and suave sense of style, tragically passed away on the night of Thursday, October 10, after succumbing to injuries sustained in a freak road accident.
