Avril makes emotional updates about fellow singer Marya's condition after stroke

Trailblazing Kenyan singer Marya, best known for her chart-topping 2010 hit ‘Chokoza’ featuring Avril, is currently recovering at home after suffering a stroke caused by a blood clot that limited oxygen flow to her brain.

In an emotional update shared by fellow artist and longtime friend Avril on Instagram, Marya’s family expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers received over the past week.

The statement confirmed that while Marya has been discharged from the hospital, her recovery journey is far from over.

"Physiotherapy is ongoing twice a day, and although the left side of her body is still unresponsive, we remain hopeful and encouraged by her strength,” the message read.

Marya herself also took to social media to share a heartfelt update on her condition, accompanied by photos with her two children.

One image showed her resting on a couch, while another captured her holding her youngest child, with her eldest son standing beside her.

In the post, the singer revealed the emotional toll the stroke has taken on her family, especially her children.

“My oldest son is in shock,” she wrote, giving fans a glimpse into the emotional struggles behind her physical recovery.

Avril's update, which has since circulated widely on social media, served not just as a health update but also as a heartfelt plea for continued financial support from fans, friends, and the Kenyan music community.

“Marya and her family still need us,” Avril emphasized. “Please continue to support and reach out to her personally as you’re able. Every call, message, prayer, or visit goes a long way.”

In an earlier post, Avril had also revealed that Marya would require extensive home-based care to aid her in regaining her motor skills and mobility.

“She needs our help to set up a care space at her home, hospital bed, wheelchair, ripple mattress, bed liners and much more,” the post read.

News of Marya’s condition has prompted messages of solidarity from fellow artists, fans, and industry insiders, many of whom credit her with paving the way for women in the Kenyan music scene.

Marya, whose real name is Mary Maina, was one of the standout female acts under the Ogopa Deejays stable in the late 2000s and early 2010s and is known for hits like ‘Hey Baby’ and ‘Sishiki Simu'.
