After 5 years of marriage, Chance the Rapper announces divorce from wife Kirsten Corley
The couple tied the knot in 2019 and five years later, they’re going separate ways.
"After a period of separation, the two of us have arrived at the decision to part ways," the couple wrote in a shared statement on their respective Instagram Stories. "We came to this decision amicably and with gratitude for the time we spent together. God has blessed us with two beautiful daughters who we will continue to raise together. We kindly ask for privacy and respect as we navigate this transition. Thank you."
Chance and Kirsten first started dating in 2013 and welcomed daughter Kensli in 2015.
They announced they had briefly separated in 2016, and the two took a child support case to court. In 2018, they reconciled, and they married in 2019 and welcomed their second daughter, Marli, that same year.
Chance's debut studio album, The Big Day, is extensively inspired by their relationship.
Days before their nuptials, Chance confirmed he and Corley were tying the knot in an X thread about how he met his soon-to-be bride.
He then said the two met in 2003 when he was 9 at his mother's office party.
"We were instructed to make way for an exclusive performance by DESTINY's CHILD!!" Chance recalled of a lip-synced performance featuring Corley. "Now I'm locking eyes with the prettiest girl I ever seen in my almost-a-decade of life on earth."
Though he was nudged by his father at the time to show off his dance moves, Chance declined, reasoning: "It's 'cause I knew I was gonna marry that girl. And I ain't wanna jump the gun."
"So I shook my head with anxiety, moved to the back of the crowd and never even introduced myself," he continued. "16 years later it's happening. This (weekend) is the time, and the place is my wedding. I'm gonna dance with my wife because this is my destiny."
Last year, the couple had a public falling out after a video showed Chance grinding on a woman and enthusiastically slapping her half-nude behind at a Carnival.
Perturbed, Corley shared a Maya Angelou passage on her Instagram about people not growing up, while Chance shared a clip of comedian Bill Bur joking about how much he loves his wife despite how much they argue.
