The teenage son of celebrated photojournalist Paul Lowe is facing murder charges after his father died mysteriously at a hiking trail in California.

Lowe, 61, was found stabbed in the neck along the trail on Saturday according to records from the County of Los Angeles Medical Examiner.

Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that his son Emir Lowe, 19, has been charged with the murder.

"The District Attorney's office filed one count of murder on suspect Emir Lowe for the murder of his father Christian Paul Lowe,” the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department told PA.

A statement from the Sheriff’s department said that officers had responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon only for Lowe to be pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

"A white male adult was seen driving away from the scene and was subsequently involved in a solo traffic collision a few miles away. The male was detained pending further investigation,” the Sherriff’s department added.

King’s College London, where Mr. Lowe was a visiting professor for war studies posted a statement on X stating: “We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Professor Paul Lowe, a brilliant photojournalist and cherished colleague. Visiting Professor in @warstudies, Paul worked closely with our Art and Reconciliation team. We send our deepest condolences to his family.”

Emir Lowe will make his first court appearance on Wednesday at the West Covina Courthouse in Los Angeles.

Lowe was an award-winning photojournalist who was widely known for his coverage of the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war that lasted between 1992-1995.
