Paw parents of Nairobi: Inside the city's heartwarming animal rescue stories
Sitting on several lush sprawling acres, the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) is a haven for rescued animals.
A dog here, a cat there, even donkeys, have learnt to mingle like little buddies, and that’s because they all share a home.
Some were rescued from accident scenes, while others simply showed up wordlessly at the KSPCA gates, looking lonely.
Emma Ngugi balances the care of all of the animals at KSPCA with the care of her own personal pets, which she takes great pride in.
Emma is the Executive Director of the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals.
When asked what she feels is her greatest contribution towards animal welfare, Emma highlights rescuing nearly 500 donkeys from illegal slaughter.
Xavier Mutugi, who owns a dog boarding house in Rongai, loves his fur babies.
The doghouse is a temporary home for dogs, either long-term or short-term, while their owners are away and want to ensure that their pets are well cared for.
“The dogs are cleaned, fed, exercised and socialized under close supervision. I also have a few rescues in the kennels, nursing them back to health,” says Xavier.
Kelvin Ongulu, affectionately known as the "father" of two domesticated shorthair cats, Snow and Flake, is an advocate for animal welfare.
He is already a member of an online group comprised of veterinary doctors and pet owners who have come together to discuss and even share advice on animal care.
Regardless of the obstacles they may face, these individuals remain committed to giving neglected animals a second chance.
Emma's unwavering commitment drives her to care for hundreds of animals, Xavier to run a dog boarding facility that also houses rescues, and Kelvin to ensure that his cats live a comfortable life while also advocating for the welfare of other animals.
