Kenyan company transforming food waste into organic fertilizer

Richard Mwangi, the founder of Organic Fields, explains that the company converts this waste into organic fertilizer for crop production, helping recycle nutrients and sequester carbon in the soil.

“Our fertilizer is unique because it comes in granulated form; it is also seeded with microbes, making it effective for the farmer. Organic field biofertilizers is made from all-natural ingredients with no added chemicals, making them 100% safe for people and our environment,” he explained.

By converting food waste into organic fertilizers, Organic Fields offers an environmentally friendly and cost-effective solution for farmers. This also reduces pressure on landfills and provides a long-term sustainable solution.

“The food waste feeds the beneficial microbes in our biofertilizer, and when applied to plants, it builds healthy soils, that promote vigorous plant growth,” he said.

According to Mwangi, Organic Fields’ innovative fertilizer provides a sustainable, eco-friendly alternative to chemical-based fertilizers, helping preserve the environment by mitigating climate change and halting biodiversity loss.

“We collect food waste from the market and animal waste to make our fertilizer. After composting, we mix it with biochar and microbes. We encourage farmers with degraded soils to embrace this product—it will help regenerate the soil and improve nutrient uptake,” he explained.

Felix Magaju, Head of Programs at the Kenya Climate and Innovation Centre, emphasizes the importance of incentivizing and supporting the private sector to turn waste into valuable products.

“We are supporting over 100 enterprises in the next three years to offer innovative solutions across the waste value chain in the country. Our goal is to help the private sector create waste management solutions that reduce waste and benefit the country,” he said.
