A caregiver's role in lifting patient and family's burden during cancer journey
As the world marks World Breast Cancer Awareness month, Flaviah Bokelo, a caregiver at Nairobi Hospice notes that while the physical impacts of treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are evident, the emotional and psychological toll they take on patients and their families is less visible, though equally significant.
“For most patients, cancer is a death sentence, at that moment they have a lot on their mind, it is our role to give support and ensure a smooth treatment process. One of the most daunting challenges cancer patients face is the psychological burden of their diagnosis,” she says.
According to Bokelo, fear of death, anxiety over treatment outcomes, and the emotional rollercoaster of hope and despair can be overwhelming.
“Because of the emotional roller-coaster and anxiety, patients often express feeling isolated, even when surrounded by loved ones, as they struggle to come to terms with their diagnosis,” she explains.
The caregiver notes that coping mechanisms vary for all patients as some find solace in support groups, where they can share their experiences with others facing similar battles. Others lean on their families or rely on mental health professionals to help navigate the psychological strain.
For families, the diagnosis of a loved one brings its own set of challenges. The uncertainty of cancer prognosis can place a heavy strain on family members, who often experience feelings of helplessness. Many struggle to find a balance between providing emotional support and managing their fears and grief.
“It’s not uncommon for patients to experience depression, anxiety, or even post-traumatic stress during their cancer journey. The roles within the family inevitably shift as the patient’s condition evolves. In the early stages, family members may rally around the patient with a sense of optimism,” she says.
