Toyota brand remains the most targeted vehicle make in 2024, according to the latest report by the Association of Kenya Insurers (AKI).

The report, which covered January 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024, revealed that Toyota accounted for 54.91 per cent of reported cases of stolen vehicles.

Other targeted makes include Isuzu (12.88 per cent), Mazda (7.06 per cent), Nissan (5.83 per cent) and Mitsubishi (3.99 per cent).

In terms of vehicle body types, station wagons had the largest risk at 67.8 per cent, lorries (11.46 per cent), Saloons (6.81 per cent) and pick-ups (3.72 per cent).

Vehicles with number plates beginning with KD were the most targeted (50.15 per cent), followed by KCs (35.17 per cent) and KAs (1.83 per cent).

Insured vehicles of less than Ksh.1 million were also not spared as they accounted for 32.52 per cent of stolen vehicles.

Those between Ksh.1 million and Ksh.2 million represented 26.07 per cent while those above Ksh.3 million constituted 27.3 per cent.

"The most expensive vehicle reported stolen was a Mitsubishi Lorry valued at Ksh12.2 million," the report read in part.

Vehicles stolen at parking areas were at 31.91 per cent, while motorists who were hijacked accounted for 7.24 per cent. On the other hand, theft of parts was the highest at 54.28 per cent.

According to the report, the recovery rate of vehicles remains a key concern with only 15.32 per cent of stolen vehicles successfully recovered. Notwithstanding, this was an improvement from 2023's recovery rate of 11.72 per cent.

Overall, the report indicated a total of 327 motor vehicles stolen in 2024, marking a significant 28 per cent decline from the 419 cases reported in 2023.
