Scrap metal dealers call out Kenya Power over alleged profiling

The Scrap and Iron Metal Dealers
Association has called out Kenya Power for reportedly profiling and blaming
them for vandalism leading to blackouts in the country.
The dealers want the power distributor’s
leadership to carry their own cross and remove them from the equation of blackouts.
The association also wants the company
to stop threatening them with moratorium, terming their business as legit and
registered for purposes of smooth running and orderly regulation.
Speaking with journalists in
Nairobi on Tuesday, the dealers asked Kenya Power to come out clean, inspect
their projects regularly and investigate their own staff for vandalism.
According to Evans Ng'an'ga, the association
Chairman, the moratorium by the past government kept them on a narrow path and they
have had to work hard in self-regulating to keep their business in check.
"We worked so hard, and
formed an association to keep all our members in check, instead of the blame
game, why can't they come we have a sitting and work together?" Posed Mr. Ng'ang'a.
The association Secretary General,
Gladys Macharia, alleged that Kenya Power has always taken them for granted and
uses them as scapegoats where they fail.
"Kenya Power always sees us
as weak, they have always used us to cover up for their failure…this has to
stop, using us to escape failure is a No!" Ms. Macharia stated.
