Relief for 67,000 farmers as Nzoia Sugar Company resumes operations

Nzoia Sugar Company factory has resumed operations bringing relief to over 67,000 sugarcane farmers.

The once mighty milling plant has made a comeback following a government directive and a prolonged period of inactivity due to lack of cane.

During the reopening ceremony, Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka acknowledged the hardships the factory workers faced during its shutdown.

The factory's revival is expected to boost the local economy, injecting much-needed vitality and bringing relief to farmers who have gone for 21 months without pay.

Governor Lusaka called for concerted efforts to stabilize the factory and asked the political class to set aside their differences and prioritize finding lasting solutions for cane farmers.

The county leaders also called upon the management to verify the Ksh.1.6 billion debt and work towards reviving the company.

“Pia niseme poleni sana kwa kuvumilia 21 months without a salary, sio rahisi ukiongeza na kwamba uchumi imekuwa ngumu…it’s a very difficult situation and we thank you na kuwashukuru sana na tumaini ya kwamba hii yote itafaulu,” said the Bungoma County boss.

Kanduyi MP John Makali stated: “Chairman, we don't want to micromanage, please you're on the seat with your board…nataka tukikuja hapa tena sitaki kuskia shida ati ni management…kama utakuwa umeshindwa muambie sisi we shift all these things we do an overhaul.”
