PS Mukhwana hails beverage sector role in job creation

The government has lauded the beverage manufacturing sector as a vital pillar of Kenya's economy, emphasizing its role in job creation and innovation.

Speaking at the 5th Annual Kenya Beverage Excellence Awards (KBEA) in Nairobi, Principal Secretary for the State Department for Industry, Dr Juma Mukhwana, highlighted the sector’s contribution to employment across production, logistics, and distribution.

“The beverage sector is not just about refreshments; it is a key driver of our economy. It employs thousands directly and indirectly and fosters innovation, which is essential for achieving our industrialization goals,” said Dr Mukhwana.

The event, which celebrates innovation and excellence in Kenya’s beverage industry, brought together leading manufacturers, stakeholders, and policymakers.

Dr Mukhwana underscored the sector’s alignment with the government’s Vision 2030, noting its impact on rural and urban livelihoods. He also highlighted the need for continued collaboration to address challenges such as high production costs and supply chain inefficiencies, which hamper growth.

“We are committed to supporting the sector through policy reforms and infrastructure development to ensure it remains competitive and continues creating opportunities for Kenyans,” he added.

Dr Mukhwana also urged manufacturers to maintain high standards while leveraging technology and innovation to enhance competitiveness. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for local industries.

“As we celebrate these achievements, let us work together to make Kenya’s beverage industry a global leader,” he said.

The KBEA, now in its fifth edition, recognizes outstanding contributions in the beverage industry across categories such as dairy, soft drinks, and alcoholic beverages. It has become a platform for showcasing the best in quality, sustainability, and innovation.

Among the evening’s standout performers was Kinangop Dairy Limited, which received three prestigious awards: First Runner-Up: Most Preferred Long Life Milk Category, First Runner-Up: Most Preferred Kids’ Yoghurt Category and Second Runner-Up: Most Preferred Mala/Lala Milk Category.

Kinangop Dairy’s achievements were attributed to its modern processing facilities, rigorous quality control measures, and consumer-focused innovations.

“These awards reflect our commitment to delivering superior products and contributing to Kenya’s economy through sustainable practices,” said Shivla Mathenge, Brand Assistant at Kinangop Dairy.
