KRA issues timeline for Nairobi rentals data collection to enforce tax payments by landlords

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a schedule for its ongoing data collection exercise on rental properties within Nairobi County.

The exercise which began on Wednesday last week is expected to run through to July 30, 2023.

The exercise is expected to involve the collection of data on rental properties along major roads in five Sub-Counties including Langata, Dagoretti North, Embakasi East, Kasarani, and Kamukunji.

Wards covered in the data collection exercise include Pangani, Ngara East, Ngara West, Eastleigh North & South, Eastleigh Airbase, California, Ruai, Kilimani, Kileleshwa, South B & C, Utawala and Mihang'o.

On Wednesday last week, KRA issued a notice indicating it would undertake a data collection exercise on rental properties within Nairobi City County and the Nairobi Metropolis as part of its tax base program.

The taxman said its officers will identify themselves to landlords and property owners through KRA staff identification cards.

The exercise is expected to enforce tax payments by landlords/property owners improving on KRA’s tax nettings from income tax.

Property owners with rentals are obligated to surrender 10 percent of annual rental income as income tax.
