The project involves the installation of Megger’s MGA Sensors, a cutting-edge solution designed to provide real-time data on the condition of overhead power lines.
The sensors enable faster fault detection, predictive maintenance, and improved load management by transmitting data via cellular networks to a central monitoring platform. The goal is to reduce outages and improve grid performance, including key reliability metrics such as the System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) and System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI).
“Previously, technical teams had to physically inspect lines to locate faults. These sensors change that by providing immediate alerts and pinpointing problem areas,” said Johan Pryra, Senior Applications Engineer at Megger.
To support the technology’s implementation, a five-day training program is underway for Kenya Power technical teams. The sessions cover theoretical knowledge, field installation, software configuration, and data analytics, facilitated by experts from Megger and Amotech.
Amotech Africa, based in Nairobi, provides test and measurement tools across East and Central Africa and is Megger’s regional distributor. The company will continue to offer technical support to ensure long-term success of the project.
