Kenya is still safe for travel, tourism federation assures visitors
The Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) has assured
that the country is still safe for travel amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations
over the high cost of living.
KTF chairman Fred Odek said Thursday that the general situation throughout the country on Wednesday when the demonstrations kicked off was calm and that all tourism circuits countrywide reported normal operations during the day.
The federation said its safety centre
monitored the situation closely all day.
“The majority of business premises remained closed with people opting to avoid the Central Business District. There were no major incidents reported on major highways or any airports/airstrips,” said Odek.
At the coastal strip of Mombasa, Diani, Malindi,
Watamu, Lamu and its environs, the situation was safe for tourists with no
incidents reported.
“In the national parks and game reserves
including circuits such as Lake Nakuru, Western Kenya, Mount Kenya, Laikipia,
and others it was business as usual and we reiterate that major tourist
circuits remain outside the demonstration areas,” Mr Odek said.
On Thursday when the protests entered
the second day, KTF reported increased commercial activities as more businesses
continue to resume countrywide.
“There have not been reports of
extensive incidents on roads and airports/airstrips, and all areas are
reportedly remaining calm,” he added.
KFT advised intending visitors to Kenya to
continue with their travel plans and urged them to make their travel
arrangements only through registered and licensed tour operators.
“KTF will continue to monitor the situation and the Safety and Communication Centre remains available on a 24-hour basis to offer updates and advice to both tourists and industry stakeholders. We will issue updates as and when the situation requires,” said the chair.
