Kenya made Ksh.250
billion last year from local and overseas tea sales, the Tea Board of Kenya said
on Monday.
The board’s CEO, Willy
Mutai, said the country netted Ksh.215 billion from export earnings and another Ksh.18
billion from local sales.
“We made Ksh.215 billion from export
earnings, capped to Ksh.181.69 billion, plus Ksh.18 billion from local sales. There
is also what we call committed teas whose sale came to Ksh.18 billion,” he
said.
At the same time, Mutai
revealed that Kenya’s tea production increased from 570 million kilograms the
previous year to 598 million kilograms in 2024.
The CEO attributed the
larger share of the production to women, saying that on each of the 834 farms
in the country, women played a critical role in the tea value chain.
Tea is among Kenya’s
top exports alongside cut flowers, tropical fruits and coffee.
Pakistan is one of the key export
destinations for Kenyan tea, together with Egypt, the U.K. and the U.A.E.
