Kenya commits to renewable energy advancement

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now says that Kenya is committed to the use of renewable energy in line with global efforts to combat climate change.

Speaking during the 9th annual global Conference on Energy Efficiency, Gachagua reaffirmed Kenya's commitment to advancing energy efficiency, in line with Africa’s Agenda 2063.

International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Dr. Fatih Birol, on her part lamented the extensive use of non-clean energy sources across the continent.

In Africa, 4 out of every 5 households in Africa, still rely on traditional methods to cook, which have contributed to a surge in respiratory diseases, particularly among women and children.

"It is undeniable that Kenya has made significant strides in the uptake of renewable energy. But when it comes to energy efficiency, the country still has a long way to go," she said.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) through its Director General Daniel Kiptoo has asserted that  it is making strides towards an more energy efficient country.

In June last year, Kenya was admitted into the International Energy Agency as an associate member, making it the fifth African country to join the autonomous intergovernmental body, which comprises 31 member states and 13 associate countries

Less than a year later, Kenya's selection to host the 9th Global Conference on Energy Efficiency perhaps reflects its notable progress in regards to renewable energy.

The Energy Efficiency conference comes on the heels of a number of energy conventions held in the country.
