Fuel Crisis: Rubis Energy CEO Jean-Christian Bergeron deported over economic sabotage
Rubis Kenya Managing Director and CEO Jean-Christian
Bergeron has been deported out of the country on accusations of economic
sabotage due to the ongoing fuel crisis in Kenya.
After a meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta,
Energy Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma recommended further sanctions against oil
marketing companies that were complicit in creating the fuel shortage in the
country.
The measures by the government comes a day
after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) stated that the oil marketing
firms were selling fuel that was meant for the Kenyan market outside the
country.
In the sanctions to be issued, four oil
marketing companies are said to face punitive measures including reducing the
capacity that they import into the country.
Further, the government is said to have set
plans in motion to strengthen the capacity of national oil to avert such a
crisis in future, and also to have a bigger role in the furl retail business.
The sanctions come as Kenyans continue to
suffer whilst looking for fuel. The long queues leading to petrol stations
spilt over to major highways as Kenyans sought to get some fuel into their
tanks.
Hundreds of vehicles lined the roads to see
what little fuel they can get, with many of the fuel stations limiting
motorists to only buy fuel not exceeding Ksh.1,000.
The situation replicated across the country with
some opting to cross the border to Tanzania to get fuel.
In Nyahururu, boda boda riders camped at fuel
stations waiting for the commodity to come so that they can resume business.
EPRA is set to release its monthly prices on
Thursday, with many Kenyans hoping that this will put an end to the fuel
shortage in the country.
