Ex-CMA boss Paul Muthaura among 10 candidates shortlisted for CBK Deputy Governor position

Former Capital Markets Authority (CMA) Chief Executive Officer Paul Muthaura has been shortlisted as a candidate for the vacant Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Deputy Governor post.

Muthaura who ended a seven-year stint at the helm of the capital markets regulator in late 2019 is among 10 applicants shortlisted for the position.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) is expected to interview the shortlisted candidates on December 13 and 14 respectively.

Following his departure from the CMA, Paul Muthaura joined ICEA Lion as the Chief Operating Officer of its General Insurance division before ending his stay with the underwriter for medical reasons.

Other applicants to the post include Charles Mutuma Ringera who is the current CEO and Board Secretary at the Higher Loans Board (HELB).

Ringera has previously served as the Group Head of Operational Risk and Compliance at KCB and the Head of Enterprise-wise Risk Management at Co-operative Bank.

James Teko Lopoyetum, another of the shortlisted candidates is meanwhile a former Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Environment and a former Director of the Currency Department at the CBK.

He is also the former Chairperson of the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC).

Current Central Depository and Settlement Corporation (CDSC) CEO Christopher Michael Mwebesa has also made the shortlist.

He is a former MD and CEO at Stanlib and SBG Securities and was the Chief Executive Officer of the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE).

Susan Jemtai Koech is meanwhile a former EAC Ministry Principal Secretary while Munir Sheikh Ahmed is a banking sector consultant and a former MD at the National Bank of Kenya (NBK).

Switzerland-based Jean Moira Awinja Wameyo is meanwhile a Director, Portfolio Financial Management at Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance and has previously held roles at the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Deloitte.

Gerald Nyaoma Arita is an insider at the CBK having joined the reserve bank in 1988 as the Director Financial Markets and is currently the Director Bank Supervision.

The two other applicants for the position are Rose Wanjiru Ngugi, a development practitioner and policy analyst and the current Director of the Centre for Economic Governance and Fredrick Otieno Oyugi- the General Manager for Internal Audit & Risk Assurance at the Kenya Ports Authority.

The 10 are expected to jostle for the second CBK Deputy Governor’s post.

The filling of the position which has for years stood vacant comes ahead of the exit of CBK Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge and his deputy Sheila M’Mbijjewe.
