Kenya’s famed footballing family, the Wanyamas, is in mourning following the death of family matriarch Mildred Wanyama.

She passed away in the early hours of Saturday, and her remains have been moved to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi for preservation.

According to the family, she succumbed to an illness.

"It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved  mother, who left us peacefully today morning. We are currently making arrangemnents and will share more details soon," MacDonald Mariga, son to the deceased mourned.

The late Mildred Wanyama was the mother of two of Kenya’s footballing greats — MacDonald Mariga and Victor Mugubi Wanyama. Mariga, who currently serves as the FKF Vice President, played for several clubs, including Inter Milan and Parma in the Italian Serie A.

Victor Wanyama, on the other hand, captained the Harambee Stars and featured for top-tier clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton in the English Premier League, as well as Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

The family is expected to release a detailed funeral programme and announce the burial date in due course.
