Former Harambee Stars team manager Willis Waliula has expressed confidence that Kenya’s Rising Starlets can qualify for the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, drawing inspiration from the Junior Starlets who made history in 2024 as the first Kenyan football team—men or women—to reach a FIFA World Cup.

The Rising Starlets are intensifying preparations ahead of their third-round FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Tanzania, with a provisional squad of 32 players currently in camp.

Head coach Jackline Juma trimmed the squad down from an initial pool of 60 players following several days of assessment, as the technical bench sharpens its focus on fitness levels, squad balance and tactical readiness.

Speaking to Citizen Digital, Waliula said the growing passion and belief within women’s football in Kenya could be the driving force behind a successful qualification campaign.

“They have the right passion for this kind of qualification. Mindset is everything — you have to believe you can make it, give everything against your opponents without fear, and remain disciplined. I see that belief in this team,” said Waliula.
Kenya’s Rising Starlets face a crucial East African showdown against Tanzania in a two-legged tie scheduled for February. The first leg will be played on February 7 at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Nairobi, kicking off at 3:00 PM, before the return leg a week later at the Azam Complex in Dar es Salaam, starting at 4:00 PM.

Waliula emphasized that thorough preparation will be key if the team is to overcome Tanzania and keep their World Cup dream alive.

“Good preparation is vital in a situation like this. You need high-profile friendlies to test yourself against strong opponents so you know what to expect. That will be very important,” he added.
The FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup is one of the most prestigious youth tournaments globally, featuring the world’s best emerging talents and serving as a pathway to senior international football. Qualification is fiercely contested, particularly in Africa, where only a few teams earn the right to compete on the global stage.

Kenya’s belief in another breakthrough is fueled by the Junior Starlets’ historic achievement in 2024, when they qualified for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup held in the Dominican Republic.

Their landmark appearance not only put Kenya on the global football map but also marked a turning point for women’s football in the country.

According to Waliula, the recent rise of women’s football in Kenya has been driven by improved technical structures and increased institutional support.

“The government and the federation have played a crucial role in the growth of girls’ football in recent times. If this support continues, I believe the future is very bright,” he stated.

As the Rising Starlets prepare for their Tanzania test, hopes are high that they can follow in the Junior Starlets’ footsteps and write another historic chapter for Kenyan football.
