Residents of Jera Central village in Ugenya sub-county were left in shock following a gruesome incident in which a man allegedly beheaded his 85-year-old grandmother, accusing her of practicing witchcraft.
The suspect, 45-year-old George Opondo, reportedly used an axe to kill his grandmother, Jenipher Aduol, before locking her body inside her house.
According to Chief of North Ugenya, John Okelo Mboto, Opondo later surrendered himself at Bar-Ober police post, confessing to the murder and requesting officers to retrieve the body.
Police officers, accompanied by personnel from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, responded swiftly to the scene.
They found the house door locked but successfully located the key, gaining entry to discover the victim’s lifeless body on the floor.
The body was transported to a private mortuary in Sega town for a postmortem examination.
Evidence collected at the scene included an axe and a spade, believed to have been used in the brutal killing, which were taken to Ukwala police station for further investigation.
During interrogation, the suspect claimed that his grandmother had been responsible for stalling the family’s progress through witchcraft.
