Residents of Sotik in Bomet County were left in shock on Friday after police arrested a man accused of slaughtering a dog and attempting to sell its meat to unsuspecting members of the public.

According to police, the suspect, identified as Richard Kigen, aged 38 years, was apprehended following a tip-off received by Sotik Township Assistant Chief, Madam Emma.

"She reported the matter to Sotik Police Station after concerned locals raised alarm over suspicious meat being circulated in the Chemagel and Kimase areas," the police said.

Acting on the report, police officers launched an operation that led to Kigen's arrest and the recovery of approximately 15 kilograms of red dog meat.

The meat, neatly packed in plastic gunny bags, was allegedly intended for sale as regular meat to unsuspecting buyers.

Upon interrogation, the suspect admitted to the offence, revealing that he had planned to distribute the meat to residents without disclosing its true source.

The County Veterinary Department was called in to assist with the investigation and has since taken samples of the meat for further analysis.

The suspect remains in custody and is expected to be charged with slaughtering an undeclared animal contrary to Section 2 of the Meat Control Act, CAP 356, as well as cruelty to animals.

Authorities have warned the public to remain vigilant and ensure they purchase meat from licensed and approved sources.

Police have launched investigations into the incident
