In a Special General Meeting held on Friday at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi, tensions flared after fifteen clubs signed to move a motion of no confidence against the chairman.
After a few opening exchanges and with the majority of the members present seemingly endorsing his ouster, Mutai threw in the towel and handed in his resignation.
He cited internal board wrangles, political pressure, and the need to protect his integrity as the reasons for his decision.
“There was an SGM today and some members were looking to eject me as chairman of the Kenya Rugby Union because of some allegations of dictatorship and some things I couldn't compromise such as my integrity. I love this game and I have done a lot for it before as director, vice chairman and now as chairman for the past two years.
“I have brought back quite a number of sponsors, I got the Kenya 7s team back to where it should be and basically looking out for the players."
Mutai says internal wars were the cause of his ouster, blaming a few board members with integrity issues for colluding to remove him from office.
“Unfortunately members of my board had integrity issues, three board members who had used forged CRB certificates and two members who refused to vacate office despite reaching their term limit and they all ganged up but unfortunately it's democracy. I leave with my head held high,” said a defiant Mutai.
Mutai, a former Kenyan international, says his lack of compromise for corrupt individuals within the union was the source of his woes, saying it had become untenable to continue leading the union.
The former rugby player is accused of financial impropriety involving Ksh 13.2 million.
The board is set to meet later to appoint a new chairman.
