AFC Leopards kept their FKF Premier League title
hopes firmly alive with a 1-0 victory over Nairobi United at Nyayo National
Stadium on Wednesday, closing the gap on leaders Gor Mahia to seven points.
Samuel Senyonjo scored the only goal of the match in
the 12th minute, giving Leopards the lead early and proving decisive in a
tightly contested encounter.
The Ingwe defended aggressively thereafter to secure
all three points and maintain their challenge at the top of the table.
Head coach Fred Ambani was pleased with the result
but reminded his players that the race is far from over.
“I always say the league ends on the last day of the
season,” said Ambani. “The most important thing is collecting points – you
never know what will happen ahead, things might change and we are still in
contention.
“I always encourage the players to fight for the
next game and the league to the end.”
Nairobi United head coach Godfrey Oduor admitted his
side's failure to convert chances proved costly, despite a strong tactical
plan.
“We watched our opponents – they conceded four goals
in the second half so we knew we just needed to contain them in the first half
then add some punch in the second half and this is what we did,” said Oduor.
“Unfortunately we did not be clinical in front of
goal. We just need to go back again and keep on working on our style of play
and I think we need to see our midfielders playing well and also the whole team.”
The win keeps Leopards firmly in the title
conversation, with every point now carrying extra weight as the season enters
its decisive phase.
Nairobi United, meanwhile, will look to bounce back
and address their finishing issues in upcoming fixtures.
