Kirinyaga woman accused of obtaining Ksh.3M in police recruitments scam

Police in Kirinyaga County have arrested Mercy Prudence Baika Mutie, a woman accused of orchestrating a Ksh. 3 million scam by falsely promising to help individuals secure positions in the National Police Service (NPS).
Mutie, who resides in Ngurubani town, is currently being held at Wang'uru police station and is set to appear in court on Tuesday.
She is accused of conspiring to defraud Dorris Njoki Njiru of Ksh. 400,000 by falsely promising to help a young man, Newton Muthiiji Alvan, join the police force.
The alleged scam came to light after Njiru filed a complaint, claiming she handed over the money to Mutie on November 20, 2025, in Ngurubani Township, Mwea East Sub-county.
Investigations revealed that Mutie had no influence over police recruitment and intended to pocket the cash.
In addition to the alleged Ksh.400,000 from Njiru, Mutie faces four charges of obtaining money by false pretenses, involving: Ksh.100,000 from Njiru in a separate scheme, Ksh. 600,000 from Harrison Njenga Njuguna and Ksh.500,000 from Maureen Kariuki Njeru, among others
According to Mwea-East sub-county detectives, all transactions were made under the false promise of securing police jobs. The officers say Mutie will face charges of conspiracy to defraud, contrary to Section 317 of the Penal Code, and four counts of obtaining money by false pretences.
