Kabras Sugar RFC head coach Carlos Katywa has expressed confidence in Eric Cantona as he steps into a bigger role following Ntabeni Dukisa’s transition from playing to coaching.
After intense Round 10 action,
heavyweights and defending champions Kabras lead the Kenya Cup standings with
47 points, two ahead of arch-rivals KCB with Menengai Oilers coming third thanks
to a head to head inferiority.
Speaking about the change within the
squad, Katywa admitted that Dukisa’s absence on the field is still felt by the
team.
The experienced fly-half had been a
key figure for Kabras Sugar, providing leadership, tactical awareness, and
composure during crucial moments of matches.
However, the tactician believes
Cantona has shown the qualities needed to fill the gap left by Dukisa.
According to Katywa, the young player
has demonstrated strong work ethic and commitment since taking on the
responsibility.
“We miss Dukisa’s experience, but
Cantona is ready for the job,” Katywa said, noting that the player has stepped
up well and continues to grow with every game.
The coach further praised Cantona for
embracing the challenge and adapting quickly to the demands of the role. Adding
that the team remains confident the player will keep improving as the season
progresses.
“…it’s better to be prepared for an opportunity
than not to be prepared for an opportunity and an opportunity comes,” he added.
“Cantona has been working very hard and no one knew that we would be having
Dukisa on the sidelines today. We miss him (Dukisa) and we miss his experience
and capabilities but his shoes are well filled because the guys who are there
are capable.”
Dukisa’s move into coaching marks a
new chapter for both the player and the club, while Cantona’s development
offers Kabras Sugar optimism as they continue their campaign.
Katywa continued, “I can tell you for
free that there is no one that can’t be replaced. For instance who thought
Andrew Amonde would be replaced at KCB? We have got Henry Cole right now, so
everyone comes and goes and someone must be ready to pick up where they left
off.”
The South African-born (Dukisa has
been a stalwart for the Sugarmen and previously expressed his commitment to the
club, even while eyeing opportunities with Kenya Simbas.
Dukisa’s move is part of a broader
strategy for the reigning Kenya Cup champions, who are navigating personnel
changes while maintaining their dominant form.
