Eight buffaloes
were on Tuesday killed at the Lake Nakuru National Park when high-voltage
power lines collapsed onto the ground, inadvertently electrocuting the herd.
The Kenya Wildlife
Service (KWS) has attributed the unfortunate incident to heavy rains and strong
winds which caused the power lines to fall.
"KWS promptly
notified the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), who swiftly responded and
rectified the power lines," the wildlife service said in a statement.
KWS
additionally emphasized the importance of wildlife safety in national
parks and assured the public that measures have been taken to prevent similar
incidents.
"We want to
assure the public that comprehensive measures have been implemented to prevent
such unfortunate incidents from occurring in the future. We call upon the
public to disregard any misinformation circulating on social media platforms
regarding this incident," said KWS.
"We urge the
public to promptly report any wildlife emergency cases to the nearest KWS
office or contact the service 24/7 hotline on 0800 597 000 for immediate
intervention."
