Rising Stars head coach Salim Babu has backed defender Amos Wanjala to shine at his new club, Valencia CF.
The Kenya
Under-20 captain joined the Spanish giants’ reserve side on Saturday, bringing
to an end his 15-month stint with fifth-tier outfit Athletic Club Torrellano.
Babu believes the highly rated defender has what it takes to eventually break
into Valencia’s senior team.
“He is a very
talented defender -disciplined and hardworking. I have seen him grow from high
school, coached him at Under-18 and Under-20 level, and I can confidently say
he will be a success at Valencia,” said Babu.
The Rising Stars
tactician also praised the move, saying it could pave the way for more Kenyan
players to secure opportunities in Europe’s elite leagues.
“Such moves open
doors for other players to be scouted, and we have seen this happen in recent
times. This will be no different. It is a good thing for Kenyan football,” he
added.
With the next
Africa Cup of Nations set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Babu
believes Wanjala has the qualities needed to feature for Harambee Stars at the
tournament.
“Amos is a
mature player, very disciplined, and hardworking. I believe he has what it
takes to play a role in the tournament and can become a key player for the
national team,” said the veteran coach.
