The HSBC Sevens tournament set for this weekend at Nyayo National Stadium has received a major boost after telecommunications firm Safaricom, through its M-PESA brand, committed KSh10 million towards the event.
M-PESA
Lead for Strategic Partnerships Victor Odada emphasised the importance of
Kenyan participation in the tournament, calling on fans to turn up in large
numbers to support the national teams - Shujaa and the Lionesses.
“It’s an
opportunity all Kenyans should participate in. Being able to showcase what we
have as Kenyans to the rest of the world is a chance we should all embrace as a
nation,” Odada said.
The
sponsorship will include cashback incentives aimed at easing costs on food and
transport for fans attending the matches. Odada also encouraged Kenyans to
engage through watch parties across the country.
Lionesses
captain Sheila Chajiro welcomed the sponsorship, noting that the financial
backing has helped stabilise the team as they push for Division One
qualification.
“We have
been walking this rugby journey for a very long time. We’ve played in finals
but not qualified. Ever since M-PESA got involved, the girls have settled. We
get paid on time and receive credit we can send back to our parents at home.
That peace of mind allows us to focus on performance and results,” she said.
Chajiro
also reflected on the team’s recent trip to Spain, saying it offered valuable
lessons ahead of the series.
“We’ve
identified what was working and what wasn’t. Spain has played in Division One
for a long time, so comparing ourselves to them helped us find ways to compete
consistently at that level.”
The
skipper added that the Lionesses are targeting a top-four finish overall, with
hopes of winning on home soil this weekend.
“Our
goal is to be in the top four, but playing at home means taking the cup this
weekend is the priority.”
Vice-captain
Freshia Awino called on fans to show up in numbers after tickets for the event
quickly sold out.
“The
pressure is high but we are grateful. It’s a great opportunity for younger
generations to come, learn from us and appreciate this beautiful sport. Kenyan
fans never disappoint when it comes to atmosphere, and we’ll do our best to
make them proud.”
