The Association of Insurance Brokers of Kenya (AIBK) has partnered with Birdview Microinsurance Ltd in a bid to boost microinsurance penetration, particularly among underserved populations in Kenya.
The
partnership aims to expand access to affordable insurance solutions for
low-income earners, SMEs, informal sector workers, and Kenyans in the
diaspora—groups that remain largely underserved in the traditional insurance
market.
AIBK
National Chairman John K. Arap Lagat said the collaboration is a strategic move
toward making insurance more inclusive.
“By focusing on niche, often overlooked
markets, we can bring essential financial protection to more Kenyans and
enhance community resilience,” he said.
Microinsurance
is increasingly seen as a key tool for growing Kenya’s overall insurance
uptake, which remains low despite a rising need for risk protection in informal
and low-income sectors. Industry experts highlight that targeted, affordable,
and accessible microinsurance products could unlock substantial growth in the
sector.
Birdview
Microinsurance, licensed by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA), focuses
on designing tailored insurance solutions for those traditionally excluded from
the mainstream market. CEO James Kimani emphasized the company's commitment to
providing impactful products and building meaningful relationships with
clients.
“Brokers
control nearly 40% of underwritten premiums and are crucial to the growth of
microinsurance. We aim to make microinsurance truly work for the underserved,”
he said.
Birdview
Director Richard Muiru added that the company is leveraging technology to
develop solutions that cater to specific segments, including Kenyans abroad.
“We’re
enabling the diaspora to provide medical care for families back home. Our
products are built to meet real needs, using digital platforms to ensure
accessibility for micro-businesses and individuals across Kenya” remarked Muiru
AIBK CEO
Eliud Adiedo said the association remains focused on promoting a robust, inclusive
insurance sector.
“This
partnership reflects our vision of expanding access through innovation. By
leveraging technology and focusing on niche markets, we aim to remove barriers
and support Kenya’s broader economic stability” said Adiedo
The partnership
is expected to roll out customized insurance offerings that are simple,
affordable, and aligned with the realities of everyday Kenyans. Both
organizations expressed confidence that their combined efforts will drive
sustainable growth in microinsurance and contribute to financial security for
millions.
