A man died on the spot while his wife sustained serious injuries after a lorry carrying sand and stones struck the couple in Kanjinji Village, Murinduko Ward, Mwea East Sub-County, Kirinyaga County.

According to residents, the deceased was riding a motorcycle and ferrying his wife to Kimuri Village when the accident occurred.

Residents led by Mathew Muthike and Martin Muchira said the impact left the motorcycle extensively damaged. The wreckage was later towed to Wang’uru Police Station.

Muchira said the lorry was transporting construction materials to a nearby institution when it hit the couple before the driver fled the scene.

“The driver hit the two and sped off immediately after the accident. We want him arrested because we know him. He frequently delivers construction materials here as there is an ongoing project in the area,” said Muchira.

Angry residents gathered at the scene and questioned why the driver failed to stop after the crash.

“He could have waited for traffic officers or helped take the injured woman to hospital. Instead, it was Good Samaritans who rushed her to Kimbimbi Sub-County Hospital,” said Muthike.

Some residents claimed the lorry had no functioning lights and said they only became aware of the accident after hearing a loud bang.

Traffic police arrived at the scene and removed the body at around 9 p.m., taking it to a local mortuary. Investigations have been launched as authorities search for the driver.

“This is the first fatal road accident we have witnessed along this road in the village,” Muchira added.
