22-year-old woman drowns in open quarry while fetching water
A 22-year-old woman died after drowning in an open quarry at Kiobegi, Nyamache sub-county, Kisii county.
The deceased, identified as Cynthia Mong'ina, had gone to the quarry to fetch water at around 1:30pm, when she slid into the quarry.
A girl who saw her drown raised alarm, prompting members of the public to rush to the scene. She was fished out of the water and rushed to Nyamache sub county hospital, where she was unfortunately pronounced death.
Nyamache sub county police commander, William Kahindi, who spoke at the scene said investigations have begun, and appealed to members of the public to remain calm.
He said the field has been identified as a hazard, and went ahead to promise to have it fenced to avoid further calamity. The officer said they will also seek to establish whether the quarry had been authorised before taking the necessary action.
The quarry is said to have been dug by a local leader who wanted the field leveled. However, the contractor dug deep to extract murram but left the quarry open.
Villagers who spoke to the media called on the government to intervene so that the quarry can be filled up.
They also called on the ministry of education to close the two schools, Kiobegi primary and Kiobegi secondary, which neighbour the field to avoid similar incidents in the future.
The body of the deceased was taken to Nyamache sub county hospital mortuary.
