Esther Wairimu was a family’s only child: Memories of GSU officer who died in ghastly crash

Esther Wairimu Mungai, 23, died in gruesome Naivasha road accident, which occurred on Saturday December 10.

Ms Wairimu was one the 11 General Service Unit (GSU) officers, who had been guarding President Uhuru Kenyatta at a rally in Bomet early Saturday. They met their death in Karai, Naivasha while driving back to Nairobi.

eDaily caught up with Ms Wairimu’s family in Ndunyu Njeru Village in Kinangop, Nyandarua County, where they wistfully recounted Wairimu’s life.

“Wairimu was a disciplined and industrious girl. Her death is a big blow to the family. There is nothing much we can do. It is God who plans everything. She joined the General Service Unit (GSU) in 2014. She was in the process of furthering her education. Actually, she was slated to graduate in April, 2017,” said Judy Wairimu Wahinya, Esther’s elder aunt.

“Wairimu was cheerful, and would joke a lot,” said Julia Wanjiku, Esther’s cousin, best friend and a former schoolmate.

On the fateful Saturday night, Judy Wairimu learnt of her niece’s death way later after the accident.

“My husband was in Nairobi when he was informed about our daughter’s death by Esther’s workmates. But as a family we learnt of her demise at 3am Sunday,” she said.

Esther was the only daughter to the late Peter Mungai Kang’ethe and Jane Wangui Mwangi.

“We are waiting for the government to inform us when we would take our daughter’s body for burial. The government told us DNA identification process will take between ten and fourteen days,” said Judy Wairimu.

43 people have since lost their lives following the Naivasha accident, which occurred when a canter transporting flammable materials from Mombasa toward Uganda rammed into several vehicles before bursting into a fireball.

The 43 were taken to Chiromo mortuary, where DNA testing is ongoing to identify bodies of loved ones.

Esther Wairimu Mungai’s work identity was No.98542 PC/W.
