‘Show some respect!’ Muturi tells presidential aspirants seeking running mates in Mt. Kenya

  • Muturi labeled the allegations as contemptuous given Mount Kenya's track record of producing three of the country’s past and current presidents.
  • Muturi also confidently reiterated that the region has a number of qualified leaders who can take up any electoral position.
  • He urged the DP not to go around making bogus claims as if the region is lacking in the leadership department.

National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi has dispelled assertions made by rival politicians purporting that the Mount Kenya region can only produce a running mate at the August General Election.

In a perceived toned-down attack on Deputy President William Ruto, Muturi, who has declared his intention to vie for the presidency on a Democratic Party (DP) ticket, labeled the allegations as contemptuous given Mount Kenya's track record of producing three of the country’s past and current presidents.

“Please give the people of the mountain some respect even though you don’t value them and we know you are only interested in their votes,” Muturi said when he addressed the media at a Juja hotel on Thursday.

“Kwa nini tunajidharau hivi? Ati sisi kazi yetu ni kwenda huko kulambalamba watu wengine huko nyuma ati sasa tunataka kuwa namba mbili? Surely knowing the history and the amount of sacrifice Mount Kenya has made for this country, then somebody anaanza kusema huku ati kujeni tutafute namba mbili huko, I mean hiyo ni madharau kubwa sana.”

Muturi also confidently reiterated that the region has a number of qualified leaders who can take up any electoral position, as such the DP should not brazenly go around making bogus claims as if the region is lacking in the leadership department.

“Wale wanataka uongozi tafadhali msikuje hapa katika mlima kutuambia ati mimi natafta kutoka hapa namba mbili na hata haujui anatafuta akitumia formula gani, si wananchi wa huku anauliza, hakuna mkutano wa hadhara anaita kusema ebu nipatieni huyu na tena mtu ameita mkutano haezi kuja kutuambia ati namba mbili kwani ameskia huku hakuna kiongozi?” posed the National Assembly Speaker.

While underscoring that there should be no space for divisive politics in the country, Muturi consequently warned Ruto’s allies to be wary of the DP’s ever-changing political plays, citing that they are expendable and can easily be expelled fom his plans.

“Jichunge. Yule mtu mnatembea naye mchunguze mwelewe kwa sababu tumeskia hayo ya mheshimiwa Jangu na tumeskia ya wengine. Tumeskia kule vile Ngirici analia na nafikiri wako wengi njiani watakuja kulia hivi karibuni. Msiba wa kujitafutia hauna pole,” he stated.
