A teacher at Magemo Primary School in Webuye, Bungoma County, early Friday morning doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire after receiving a termination letter.

The teacher’s employment was terminated after he allegedly impregnated one of the pupils at the school.

According to the school watchman Jack Barasa, the teacher – Wycliffe Akeve – entered the school through the fence at around 7am.

He then reportedly engaged in banter with other teachers, before later locking himself up in the staff room and committing the act.

The teacher is presently receiving treatment at a Bungoma hospital after suffering burn injuries.

Mihuu Ward MCA Violet Makhanu and Webure East DEO Sospeter Were have since called for the law to be followed and the teacher to be charged.

Parents, on their part, expressed fear at the safety of their children, further calling for teachers to act as role models.

Webuye East DCC Peter Yego, while confirming the incident, warned teachers against such similar relations with learners saying action will be taken against those found culpable.
