The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) on Tuesday shut down a radio station it said has been operating illegally in Nairobi and placed its owner under custody.

According to CA, Gituamba FM has been operating from a residential building at Puma Court, Tena Estate in Nairobi.

The authority said the station was in existence despite not issuing it with a licence, contrary to the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998 (KICA).

The station owner, Nelson Githinji Ndegwa, is presently being held at the Buruburu Police Station awaiting arraignment.

He is set to be charged with establishment of a radio communication station without a valid Licence, contrary to Sections 35(2), 46C and 46Q of the KICA.

“Operating an illegal radio station may cause interference of licensed broadcasters, compromising the quality of broadcasting services available to consumers,” read a statement by CA Director General Ezra Chiloba.

“Anyone wishing to provide information and communication services in the country must ensure they obtain appropriate Licences from the Authority without fail.”
