A police officer who was on duty the night the three prisoners escaped from the Kilgoris police station cell in Narok County has been arraigned in a Narok court on charges of negligence.

Andrew Bett was on Tuesday charged with three counts of negligence in his work on November 19, the day the three suspects escaped from custody.

The three offences were divided according to the three escaped prisoners: Shadrack Leparan, 29, who is accused of murder; 28-year-old Enoch Ndege and 32-year-old Patrick Mausa, who are both facing charges of theft.

Appearing before Justice Josphat Mungai, Bett denied the three charges and was released on bail of Ksh.100,000 and a surety of the same amount.

The case will be mentioned on December 8 and its hearing is set for March next year.

According to a police report, the three managed to escape after digging a hole into the wall of the police cell and fled towards Kilgoris township.

The three were among five suspects being held in the cell, where the other two denied any knowledge of the escape upon questioning.

The case comes just days after the re-arrest of three terror convicts who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison.
