Family of late Caleb Otieno, who died in Mombasa police cell, demand justice

The family of the late Caleb Otieno are now demanding for justice after it was established that he indeed died from injuries.

On Tuesday a post-mortem was conducted by a government pathologist who later confirmed that Caleb suffered a series of injuries before his death.

Caleb Otieno died on September 18 this year while in police custody in Changamwe, Mombasa.

The findings are in contrast to what Changamwe OCPD Peter Onanwa said.

He claimed that the deceased collapsed in the police cell and was pronounced dead after he was rushed to Coast General Hospital.

“On September 18, Caleb was taken to Changamwe Police Station where he was beaten; his ribs, back and neck were found to be broken. Every part of his body had an injury,” one of the family members claimed.

“This gentleman did not receive the justice he deserved, it’s been a month now; the police did not put in effort to investigate the matter,” Muhuri Human Rights Executive Director Hassan Abdille said.

Mr. Abdille had earlier on accused the Changamwe police of trying to cover up for the person(s) responsible for the ordeal.

He further alleged that a local doctor was threatened and could not conducting the postmortem objectively.
