Kenyans among top 100 meaningful business leaders
Equity Group CEO James Mwangi and Kenya Breweries Limited’s Head of Sustainability and Community Engagement Arnolda Shiundu have been selected for the 2021 Meaningful Business 100 (MB100).
The two are among three Kenyans selected from a pool of 500 nominations from 75 countries globally.
The MB 100 celebrates leaders combining profits and purpose to help achieve United Nations Global goals. The 2021 nominees included corporate CEOs, entrepreneurs, sustainability leaders and impact investors.
Now in its third edition, the MB 100 says its membership ‘takes a people-centered approach, placing the wellbeing of employees and those impacted by the business, at the forefront of their strategy’.
Among the judges this year included Nikhil Seth an assistant Secretary General at the UN, Stasia Mitchell, the global entrepreneurship lead at audit firm EY and Paul Lindley the founder of Ella’s Kitchen among others.
According to MB 100, each leader must have either created positive, direct and intended impact aligned to one or more SDGs in the last 12 months or must have been the driving force behind the product, service or project that combines purpose and profit.
Mwangi was selected under the categories of financial services, no poverty and reduced inequalities. Ms Shiundu on the other hand has been selected under three categories namely food and beverage, promotion of responsible consumption and climate action.
Also selected is Ashok Shah the CEO, APA Apollo Group under the categories of financial services and economic growth.
In recent years a number of Kenya’s corporations have become conscious of how their operations, consumption and production are impacting the environment and community.
In its 2021 CEO Outlook, dubbed Plugged-in, people-first, purpose-led audit consultancy firm KMPG says that 98 percent of CEOs in East Africa are shifting focus to the social component of their Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) as they seek to address social issues such as gender equality, diversity and inclusion.
The report further indicates that 40 percent of East Africa CEOs see their organization’s ESG programs improving their financial performance compared to global CEOs at 36 percent.
